Why does a certain perfume smell good on others but bad on me?

This is due to body chemistry which affects the way in which a fragrance reacts to the skin. There are certain things that affect the natural smell of your skin like medications, hormonal changes, diet, stress etc. These determine how a certain perfume will smell on you.

What is the difference between Eau De Parfum and Eau De Tiollete?

These define how strong a perfume is or, to be precise, the water and alcohol quantity in a perfume. A scent usually has 15-25 percent perfume oil blended in alcohol. A mixture that has lower proportion of alcohol and oil is called eau or water.

Here is a list of different perfume compositions:

Perfume oil: It comprises 15-30% perfume oil not in an alcohol but oil base. Hence, this is the richest variety of fragrance.

Parfum or Perfume: It comprises15-25% perfume oil in an alcohol base. This is also known as extrait or extract.

Soie de Parfum: It comprises 15-18% perfume oil in an alcohol base.

Eau de Toilette: It comprises 4-10% perfume oil in an alcohol base.

Eau de Parfum: It comprises 8-15% perfume oil in an alcohol base.

Eau Fraiche: It comprises less than 3% perfume oil in an alcohol base.

Eau de Cologne: It comprises 2 to 5% perfume oil in an alcohol base.

Is there a way to make a perfume stay longer on my skin?

Yes, you can. Perfumes evaporate easily on dry skin, so in order to make it last longer, you can first apply cream or lotion and then the perfume. Cetaphil is a popular cream that people use before applying fragrance. You can also use jojoba oil or petroleum jelly.

What are top, middle and base notes?

Top note gives the first impression of scent when applied to the skin. They are light and evaporate quickly. They last from 5 to 30 minutes.

Middle notes are also known as “heart notes” and comprises the body of the scent. They take about 10-30 minutes to develop on the skin.

Base notes are those that have heavy molecular weight. They take time to evaporate and hence last longer than other notes. Some examples would be vanilla, musks, woods, oakmoss etc.

There are scents that do not have base, middle and top notes. Such scents are called “linear”.

What is a ‘fragrance family’?

Fragrance families are groups of aroma. There are 6 families of fragrances: Aldehydics, Greens, Tobacco, Oriental, Chypre and Florals.

How can I store my perfume for its better longevity?

Fragrances that are stored properly last much longer. It should be kept in a box, away from heat and light. Try not to expose it directly to air.
